Winner of Record-Breaking Lottery Jackpot Finally Claims Prize, Let Someone Cut in Line

March 5, 2019

On Monday, South Carolina's lottery commission announced that the person who won a record $1.54 billion Mega Millions jackpot back in October had finally come forward--sort of--to claim their prize. The winner chose to remain anonymous, instead retaining an attorney to collect a one-time lump sum (after taxes) of nearly $878 million. As The New York Times notes, the newly minted multimillionaire is fortunate to reside in South Carolina, one of a handful of states where winners are allowed to remain anonymous. The winner's also lucky that they let someone cut in line on the day of their windfall. "A simple act of kindness led to an amazing outcome," the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission said in a statement.
