Trump Issues 1st Veto After Congressional Rebuke of His Emergency Border Declaration

March 18, 2019

Donald Trump issued the first-ever veto of his presidency on Friday, rejecting Congress' block of his emergency declaration to fund his long-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump's move came after the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate voted 59-41 last Tuesday to overturn his emergency declaration. “Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution,” Trump said, “and I have the duty to veto it.” As The New York Times noted last week, this was the first time in American history that Congress voted to block a presidential emergency declaration.
