Texas Border Patrol officials say they cannot accept donations from the public for facilities where children are reportedly being held in substandard conditions. Theresa Brown, a former policy advisor for U.S. Customs and Border Protections, says the facilities cannot accept the goods under existing law, explaining, "Without a change in law, DHS, CPB and Border Patrol cannot accept those private donations." Despite this, some persistent Texans are still trying to get donated diapers, wipes, soap and toothbrushes to the detained migrant kids. “In an ideal world, the facility would accept it, so we’re going to ask with all sincerity that they do,” says donor Austin Savage. “Even if we get rejected, at least we made the effort."
