President Trump Wants Feds to Review Jussie Smollett Case

March 28, 2019

Early Thursday, President Trump tweeted that Chicago prosecutors' handling of the Jussie Smollett case was "an embarrassment," calling on the FBI and Department of Justice to review their handling of the case against the Empire actor. As the AP notes, prosecutors offered little explanation and infuriated Chicago’s police chief and mayor this week when they dropped all 16 charges against Smollett related to making a false police report. Yet prosecutors still insist the actor faked a racist, anti-gay attack on himself in January, while his attorneys say the two brothers who claim they helped Smollett fake the hate crime are lying. The charges against Smollett were dropped after he agreed to forfeit his $10,000 bond and perform community service, with the state's attorney's office saying they were focused on locking up perpetrators of violent crime and that the actor posed no threat in this regard.
