People Aren't Thrilled That Jennifer Lopez Was Part of Grammys' Motown Tribute

February 11, 2019

Even before Jennifer Lopez took the stage at Sunday's Grammy Awards, people were confused as to why a non-black performer was booked for such a performance. Smokey Robinson, who performed alongside J-Lo, told Variety, "Motown was for everybody. Everybody. Who's stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing anything for Motown?" A lot of folks, apparently. On Twitter, one user called J-Lo's performance "insulting," while several other users suggested a litany of African-American musicians who could have performed instead. For her part, J-Lo gushed to ET, "It's just a dream come true. Singing up there with Smokey Robinson, like, I gotta pinch myself. I grew up on all those songs and because my mom loved him so much she passed him on to us.”
