Sunscreen is widely used for the way it protects your skin, but it might be doing something else, according to UPI. FDA researchers completed an analysis, released on Tuesday, which shows that suncreen chemicals can be absorbed into the blood. At times, the chemicals surpass the FDA's existing thresholds "for potentially waiving some of the additional safety studies." Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said, "There is evidence that some sunscreen active ingredients may be absorbed. However, the fact that an ingredient is absorbed through the skin and into the body does not mean the ingredient is unsafe. Rather, this finding calls for further industry testing." The FDA continues to encourage people to combine sunscreen use with other sun-blocking measures, such as protective clothing.
