Court Rules Trump Can't Block His Critics on Twitter

July 10, 2019

President Donald Trump is violating the First Amendment by blocking critics on Twitter, a New York federal court of appeals ruled on Tuesday. According to The Washington Post, their decision upholds a previous ruling that also deemed it unconstitutional for the president to exclude people simply because they express views he doesn't share. The case was originally brought forth in 2017 by seven people whom Trump had blocked on Twitter. Attorneys representing the blocked users argued that Twitter was similar to a town hall meeting and that citizens must be allowed to engage in public policy debates and respond to government officials directly.
