Christopher Columbus statues in San Francisco, California, and Providence, Rhode Island, were vandalized on the eve of the holiday that bears his name, according to CNN. Both statues were saturated with blood-red paint. The San Francisco statue had graffiti that read, "Destroy all monuments of genocide and kill all colonizers." In Providence,  sign chained to the vandalized read, "Stop Celebrating Genocide." That statue also had the word "genocide" spray-painted on it. One woman who claims Native American heritage said, "This was unnecessary. These are our tax dollars that have to clean this. People don't think."
