A volcanic island in New Zealand erupted on Monday, killing at least five people and leaving many more missing. Police Commissioner John Tims told the AP that there were fewer than 50 people on White Island, which is popular with tourists eager to explore its moon-like surface, when it erupted, and that 23 individuals--including the five deceased--had been ferried away from the explosion. Some of the folks on the island were traveling on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. White Island sits about 30 miles off the coat of mainland New Zealand, and scientists recently noticed an uptick in volcanic activity there. Hence, people are already questioning why tourists were still permitted to visit the island.
