2 Parkland Shooting Survivors Commit Suicide 1 Week Apart

March 25, 2019

Florida’s emergency chief is calling on the state legislature to provide more mental health resources at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after two teenage survivors of the school's 2018 shooting committed suicide in the past week. Last Sunday, 19-year-old Sydney Aiello killed herself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after surviving the shooting that killed her best friend, Meadow Pollack. Aiello's mother told news outlets she experienced survivor's guilt over the attack and had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Meanwhile, a second, as-yet-unidentified student committed this past weekend. “Now is the time for the Florida Legislature to help,” Jared Moskowitz, Florida’s emergency management director and a former state representative from Parkland, tweeted Sunday. “Mental health is a bipartisan issue."
