Local Authorities Speak Out Against Marijuana Legalization

February 8, 2019

Local law enforcement officials from across our area gathered in Livingston County Thursday to voice their opposition to the legalization of marijuana in New York State. Their main message was simple. They said it's all about safety. Like many opponents to legalization, they claim crime and highway deaths will increase - and they used numbers from Colorado to prove their point. Five years after pot became legal there, 70 percent of recreational users admitted to driving after using. Marijuana-related traffic deaths have increased 151 percent. Officers also pointed out that unlike with alcohol currently, there is not a roadside test to measure THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Two of every three New Yorkers responding to a poll last month say they support recreational use.
