Kanye West Is Contractually Barred From Retiring

March 5, 2019

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Kanye West’s current contract with EMI actually forbids him from retiring from music. According to documents obtained by the outlet, EMI states in the contract, “At no time during the Term will you seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist or producer or take any extended hiatus during which you are not actively pursuing Your musical career in the same basic manner as You have pursued such career to date.” West's music publishing contract came up in the lawsuit he lodged in Los Angeles Superior Court in late January. West is seeking to "obtain his freedom" from publishing and record contracts, citing California Labor Code section 2855, which limits personal service contracts to no more than seven years.
