Jussie Smollett Indicted, Charged With Felony for Filing False Police Report

February 21, 2019

Jussie Smollett has been indicted by a Chicago grand jury and faces a felony change for filing a false police report about his alleged attack last month. Chicago police announced Wednesday that they want the Empire star turn to turn himself in as soon as possible. "We are trying to be diplomatic and reasonable, and we're hoping he does the same," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Under Illinois law, the 36-year-old actor could face up to three years in prison if convicted of the crime. "Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked," Smollett's attorneys said in a statement. "Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense."
