Is It OK to Let Your Kids Eat Their Boogers?

March 27, 2019

Nothing's grosser than eating boogers, right? Not if you're a kid, apparently. As Lifehacker points out, there's a ton of research out there which says eating boogers is not only relatively harmless, but also healthy for kids. The basic premise here is that by consuming the germs trapped within their noses, kids strengthen their immune systems in the process. "Generally speaking, we think exposure to bacteria is good for kids," says Dr. Kathleen Sullivan, chief of allergy and immunology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Another pediatrician agreed with Sullivan's theory, but hedges a bit, concluding, "I wouldn’t encourage a kid to eat their boogers, or roll in bacteria, but I don’t think we shield them in bubble.”
