Find Out Why Being a Facebook Moderator Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be

February 26, 2019

An explosive new investigative feature from The Verge has exposed how mentally and physically traumatizing it can be to work as a Facebook content moderator. Hourly workers at a Phoenix-based Facebook office (who earn about $15 an hour) tasked with censoring violent, racist and sexually exploitative content describe an environment where employees smoke weed and have sex on the job while developing PTSD-like symptoms after absorbing Facebook's content. They also come to embrace conspiracy theories after being tasked with policing so many of them at work. “I don’t think it’s possible to do the job and not come out of it with some acute stress disorder or PTSD," a moderator named Randy says. “My mental health--it’s just so up and down."
