Facebook Announced a Major Shift in the Way it Does Business

March 7, 2019

In--what else?--a Facebook post on Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg announced that his social-media company would be shifting to "a privacy-focused communications platform" which makes use of encrypted content that cannot be viewed by outsiders or even certain Facebook users. As the AP notes, Zuckerberg's proclamation is viewed as a partial response to "more than two years of turbulence for repeated privacy lapses, spreading disinformation, allowing Russian agents to conduct targeted propaganda campaigns, and a rising tide of hate speech and abuse." Analysts are skeptical of the new approach, with one calling it an "admirable goal," while cautioning, "I’m just not sure it addresses the bigger issues Facebook is facing right now.”
