Waiter Returns $424,000 Cashier's Check to Customer Who Failed to Tip Him

Last Saturday, Karen Vinacour and her daughter had lunch at Patsy's Pizzeria in New York City and declined to leave a tip. Instead, the 79-year-old retired social worker accidentally left a $424,000 cashier's check on the table. With help from The New York Daily News, her waiter, Armando Markaj, tracked down Vinacour, who returned to the restaurant to retrieve her check, which she intended to use as the down payment on a new home. (The proceeds came from the sale of her old apartment.) Upon returning to Patsy's, she explained that she stiffed Markaj because when she asked him why there weren't more photos of women on the wall, he replied, "Maybe women don't eat a lot of pizza." (There are, in fact, several photos of famous women on Patsy's walls.) Vinacour admitted that her failure to tip wasn't her best moment and tried to make it right, but Markaj refused a belated gratuity--while wholeheartedly accepting Vinacour's apology and thanks.
