Using Opioids & Marijuana Together Can Relieve Pain Without Causing Addiction

New research suggests that you can prevent addiction and experience more effective pain relief by using marijuana and opioids together. In a study presented Tuesday at the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, researchers found that while both substances impair cognitive skills when used separately, combining them heightens their pain-relieving qualities--without any significant increases in memory loss or impulsivity. "The current opioid epidemic underscores the need for safe and effective pharmacotherapies for treating pain," says study author Vanessa Minervini. "These data provide additional evidence supporting the notion that opioid-cannabinoid mixtures that are effective for treating pain do not have greater--and in some cases have less--adverse effects compared with larger doses of each drug."
