Trump Wants to Reopen Country Soon to Prevent "Far Bigger Problems" With Economy

March 24, 2020

President Trump is signaling that he wants to reopen the U.S. for business much sooner than health experts are recommending in an effort to save the country's economy. “We can’t have the cure be worse than the problem,” Trump told reporters at a briefing Monday. “We have to open our country because that causes problems that, in my opinion, could be far bigger problems.” He added that if businesses are closed for much longer, it could cause "probably more death from that than anything that we’re talking about with respect to the virus.” The AP notes that Team Trumpers are already echoing that message: On Monday, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said on FOX Business channel, “We can’t shut in the economy. The economic cost to individuals is just too great. The president is right. The cure can’t be worse than the disease, and we’re going to have to make some difficult trade-offs.”
