"Sopranos" Prequel Film Gets 2020 Release Date

March 15, 2019

The long-awaited Sopranos prequel film will hit theaters in 2020, more than 13 years after the HBO series ended. Consequence of Sound reports that the film has been named Newark, shortened from The Original Saints of Newark, and will be released ahead of awards season on September 25, 2020. Sopranos creator David Chase teamed up with Lawrence Konner for the script, which is rumored to be set during the Newark riots of July 1967. It was announced earlier this year that Michael Gandolfini--son of the late James--will play his father’s iconic role as a young Tony Soprano. The film will also star Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and John Magaro.
