People Who Ask on Facebook to Donate to a Charity Instead of Getting Them a Gift Are Thirsty AF

June 28, 2019

Don’t misconstrue this as being anti charity, because I’m not. I’ve raised money or donated my money/time to The Special Olympics, The Pirate Toy Fund, 13Thirty Cancer Connect, Gilda’s Club, and more, but anyone who takes part in the “for my birthday, instead of presents please donate to X charity” is far less concerned with actually raising money than they are people thinking they’re a good person. I’d love to see the numbers on how much is raised by this tactic, but I’m willing to bet it’s pretty low. The entire premise is based on your Facebook friends actually planning on getting you gifts. Let’s be real for a second, the vast majority of your Facebook friends only know it’s your birthday because Facebook told them and they have no intention of giving you a gift. Do you really think because they saw your “charitable gesture” that they’re going to dig into their wallet and donate? You’re lucky if you get them to write on your wall. Social media can be a good tool for fundraising but if you think anyone is going to donate because it’s your birthday you’re delusional. Get a clue.
