A New Zealand college freshman is believed to have been dead in his room for close to two months before his body was discovered. The Guardian reports that the unidentified male student was found Monday in his dorm at the University of Canterbury, after students reported a smell to police. The student's stepfather had reportedly reached out to friends, but it's unclear if he ever called police. "This tragedy raises a number of questions and I expect the university to conduct a thorough investigation,” says New Zealand Education minister Chris Hipkins. The body was in such a state of decomposition that police had to bring in a disaster victim identification team, which uses fingerprints, DNA and dental records to determine identity. The cause of death has not yet been determined. One student who lives in the same dorm told the local Stuff newspaper, "We have no idea who is running this place, there is an overwhelming lack of presence from adult staff in this hall."
