NCAA Grants Spring Sport Athletes an Extra Year of Eligibility

March 31, 2020

The NCAA ruled Monday that they will grant an extra year of eligibility to all college athletes in spring sports like baseball, softball and lacrosse, after their seasons were canceled due to the coronavirus, ESPN reports. The ruling will affect all athletes, not just seniors, and will allow teams to expand rosters beyond current limits to account for incoming recruits and those who were expected to graduate. For athletes who would have exhausted heir eligibility this year, the NCAA will leave it up to the schools whether to offer them financial aid. Other sports affected include tennis, golf, track and field, rowing, men's volleyball, beach volleyball and women's water polo. Winter sports athletes like basketball players will not get the waiver as they were able to play most of their seasons.
