It seems like everyone is talking about the novel coronavirus, and having a talk with your children about it is a good idea. CNN offers the following suggestions for talking about this situation in a way that is both informative and reassuring.

  • Talk to them first. You might be waiting for them to come to you, but talking first cuts down on misinformation you'll have to correct.
  • Find out what they know.
  • Keep explanations simple.
  • Give them space to worry. Validate their concerns.
  • Tell them what adults are doing to keep them safe.
  • Give them a sense of control. For instance, let them decide what song to sing while washing their hands.
  • Stay informed so you're a good source.
  • Be patient.
  • Follow up. You need to make sure they understand what you've said and you need to field any lingering questions.
