Game of Thrones release season 8 posters

Game of Thrones' next-to-last episode was "carnage from beginning to end," as Variety put it in their recap. That's no exaggeration: After last week's episode, which saw Missandei beheaded in front of Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons was clearly out to avenge (and get revenge for) her confidant's death. Here are some of the major highlights of the season's fiery fifth episode, "The Bells."

Varys was roasted alive by Drogon (at the behest of Daenerys) after attempting to back Jon Snow as the heir to the Iron Throne. Dany, naturally, made it clear she was not thrilled with that betrayal.

  • Daenerys and Drogon then head to King's Landing and annihilate both the Iron Fleet and the Golden Company.
  • Jaime Lannister kills Euron Greyjoy after a violent tussle, which erupts after the latter tries to kill the former.
  • The Hound and the Mountain duke it out in the violent, tense Clegane Bowl. To no one's surprise, both parties perish after tumbling into a fire pit. Prior to the fight, Mountain also killed Master Qyburn.
  • As the episode nears its end, Cersei and Jaime Lannister find themselves under the Red Keep, with their escape route blocked by rubble. Once they realize that leaving is futile, Cersei says, "I want our baby to live. I want our baby to live. Don't let me die. Please don't let me die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. Not like this. Not like this. Not like this."
  • Jaime embraces her and attempts to soothe her, saying, "Look me in the eyes. Just look at me. Nothing else matters. Nothing else matters. Only us." The tunnel ends up caving in, and the pair are buried.
  • The episode ends with Arya Stark inexplicably finding (and then mounting) a white horse, and galloping into the distance.
