Florida Teachers Can Arm Themselves Under New Gun Bill

May 2, 2019

A bill allowing Florida teachers to carry guns in the classroom was passed on Wednesday, Reuters reports. It's an expansion of a program launched after the deadly February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, and it's intended to help prevent another such massacre. The voluntary Guardian program will allow teachers who a 144-hour training course to bear arms at school. While there are those who believe that an armed teacher could provide the best defense against a school shooter, there are just as many who worry it's not a safe option. The bill must now be signed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.
