Disney announced on Tuesday that it will launch a new Star Wars trilogy in 2022. Variety reports that the first of the new films will hit theaters on December 16, 2022, followed by a second film on December 20, 2024, and a third on December 18, 2026. The company also announced that James Cameron’s long-awaited follow-up to Avatar has been pushed back. Avatar 2 is now set for release on December 17, 2021, as opposed to its original December 18, 2020 date. Future Avatar sequels have now been delayed till December 22, 2023 and December 19, 2025, respectively. “With a strong summer already in place, we are eager to carry that momentum forward over the coming years thanks to a creative wellspring of bold and imaginative stories coming from our world-class studios,” says Cathleen Taff, the studio’s president of theatrical distribution. “Including several new chapters of two revered franchises, Avatar and Star Wars.”
