Former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was flown to Boston on Monday after being shot in his native Dominican Republic Sunday night. Surgeons worked on him for six hours in a Beantown hospital, taking out a portion of his gall bladder to preserve his damaged liver tissue. He also has intestinal damage. The Red Sox organization offered to send an air ambulance to receive him in the United States on Monday and delivered him to Boston, where he is in stable condition. When Sox fans discovered the athlete was back in town, dozens arrived in the area and caused a traffic jam. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also sent well-wishes, as did former president Barack Obama. The 43-year-old Ortiz had been in a Santo Domingo nightclub when shots broke out.
