Amsterdam Allows Tourists to "Marry" a Local for a Day

June 6, 2019

Everyone wants to do what the locals do when they travel, but now you can "marry" a local for a day in Amsterdam as part of the city's efforts to improve tourist relations and promote its lesser-known attractions. “Tourists not only feed from the city, but can also build a connection with people who live here,” says Jona Rens, founder of Wed and Walk, which has been conducting mock weddings since 2015. The organization held a mass "wedding" on Wednesday between tourists and Amsterdammers--who then serve as a day-long tour guide for their "spouse." The nuptials really do include a walk down an aisle--although these marriages are usually sealed with a hug, not a kiss.
