Amid Bipartisan Outcry, Trump Says Special Olympics Funding Will Be Restored

March 29, 2019

After Education Secretary Betsy DeVos spent days catching heat from Republicans, Democrats and advocates for the developmentally disabled over the Trump Administration's proposal to defund the Special Olympics, President Trump told reporters Thursday that he would now be "funding the Special Olympics" to the tune of $17.6 million. Holding court on the White House's South Lawn, Trump said, “I’ve been to the Special Olympics. I think it’s incredible and I just authorized a funding. I heard about it this morning. I have overridden my people." Walking back her days-long defense of the now-scrapped budget proposal, DeVos issued a statement which read, “I am pleased and grateful the President and I see eye to eye on this issue and that he has decided to fund our Special Olympics grant. This is funding I have fought for behind the scenes over the last several years.”
