If your kids have recently gotten, or will soon get their own mobile device, it can be difficult to stay current on apps that may not be safe for them use. Luckily, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department, via Lifehacker, has compiled a list of apps that parents need to be aware of. Here are 10 of them (see full list at the link):

  1. MeetMe. This is a dating app where users are encouraged to meet in person.
  2. Grindr. Another dating app intended for gay, bi and transgender adults.
  3. Skout. Another dating app intended for people over 18.
  4. WhatsApp. A messaging app that allows users to send texts, photos and videos or video chat.
  5. TikTok. A video sharing app where users are vulnerable to cyber-bullying and explicit content.
  6. Badoo. A dating app intended for adults.
  7. Bumble. A dating app similar to Tinder, but requires women to make first contact.
  8. Snapchat. Popular messaging app, but comes with privacy concerns.
  9. Kik. Allows anyone to contact and direct message your child.
  10. LiveMe. A live-streaming video app with geolocation that can allow anyone to find your child's exact location.
