Last week in Passaic, New Jersey, Beronica Ruiz informed her 12-year-old son's vice principal that her child was told that "all Mexicans should go back behind a wall" by a group of students. Ruiz was walking home from school with her son and 1-year-old daughter, whom she was pushing in a stroller, when he noticed three of his tormenters following them. One of these kids, a 13-year-old African-American boy, proceeded to punch Ruiz's son in the face and then beat Ruiz unconscious. The family's lawyer is calling the assault "a brutal hate crime," and the 13-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and simple assault before being released into his parents' custody. The lawyer thinks the attack could have been avoided if the school had properly punished the students for "using racially charged slurs," and tells The Washington Post that he plans to file a lawsuit on behalf of the Ruiz family.
