Amazon Cancels Plans for 2nd Headquarters in New York City Amid Local Outcry

February 14, 2019

Amazon's out! On Thursday, the e-tailing behemoth announced it's canceling plans to construct a second company headquarters in Queens, New York, after local lawmakers and residents expressed outrage over the heavily subsidized deal. "We’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens," the company said in a statement. "While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence...We are disappointed to have reached this conclusion." Amazon added it currently has no plans to "reopen the HQ2 search." Instead, they'll just move ahead with plans for their other HQ2 expansion in northern Virginia. Despite Amazon not planning on repoening their search it hasn't stopped local leaders from Rochester from calling for our area to be one of consideration.
