Alabama Governor Signs Strict Anti-Abortion Bill Into Law, A-Listers React

May 16, 2019

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a controversial anti-abortion bill on Wednesday. "Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, a bill that was approved by overwhelming majorities in both chambers of the Legislature," said Ivey, a Republican, in a statement shared by CNN. "To the bill's many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians' deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God." The law, which was passed by the Senate 25-6, only allows exceptions "to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother” for ectopic pregnancy and if the "unborn child has a lethal anomaly." While Democrats re-introduced an amendment to exempt rape and incest victims, the motion failed on an 11-21 vote. Per the wording of the law, doctors who perform abortions could face life in prison. Following news of the bill passing, A-Listers such as Lady Gaga, Sarah Silverman and Bella Hadid took to social media to criticize the legislation. “This is a travesty and I pray for all these women and young girls who will suffer at the hands of this system,” Gaga wrote. Silverman added, “We have become our grandparents, shaking our heads & saying, ‘What is the world coming to,’ but we’re talking about the decay of human rights instead of rock-n-roll.”
