16 States Sue Trump Over National Emergency as Protests Erupt Across U.S.

On Monday, 16 states filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump for declaring a national emergency to fund his Mexican border wall. The suit alleges that Trump is acting "contrary to the will of Congress" by circumventing legislator-driven funding measures and that putting money from military budgets toward the wall will damage state economies and potentially weaken existing anti-drug security protocols. “President Trump is manufacturing a crisis and declaring a made-up ‘national emergency’ in order to seize power and undermine the Constitution,” California governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “This ‘emergency’ is a national disgrace.” In his own statement, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra added, “President Trump treats the rule of law with utter contempt."
